Colours and moods — Art and painting for kids

Colours change how a picture feels. Warm, bright colours make a scene feel happy and lively, like a birthday party. Cool, soft colours make it feel calm and quiet, like a still lake. Dark, dull colours make it feel gloomy or spooky, like a haunted house.

Artist's tip

Feel the scene — “decide the mood first, then choose the colour family”

  1. Happy, lively, exciting → warm, bright colours.
  2. Calm, peaceful, quiet → cool, soft colours.
  3. Gloomy, sad, scary or mysterious → dark, dull colours. Red is used for danger and warnings; green for nature.

Use it for: Story illustrations, festival cards and choosing colours for a poster.

Worked example: 🎭 Which colours would best show a calm, still lake? → cool, soft colours

  1. A still lake feels calm and peaceful.
  2. Calm scenes use blues and greens, so a calm, still lake is usually painted with cool, soft colours.

Check: Painting the lake in fiery reds would feel hot and lively, not calm ✓
