A pin: the bishop attacks the knight, and the king stands behind it on the same line. The knight may not move — it would leave its king in check.

Pin the black queen to her king with your rook. If she takes it, your king takes back.

Your move

💡 Need a hint?

Line up your rook, bishop or queen with a black piece AND the black king behind it. The pinned piece is stuck: attack it again before Black can rescue it.

What you learn here

A pin is an attack on a piece that cannot move away because a more valuable piece — often the king — stands behind it on the same line. A piece pinned to the king may not move at all, so you can attack it again with a pawn or another piece and win it.

Chapter 6 — Tactics: Win material with the tricks strong players use: pins, skewers, double attacks, discovered attacks, removing the defender and overloaded defenders.
