Keeping promises — Leadership skills for students

A leader’s word must mean something. If you say you will bring the ball, bring the ball. Reliable people promise only what fits their time, write their promises down and, if something goes wrong, tell people early. Saying yes to everyone to please them is the quickest way to break promises.

Leader's tip

Promise less, deliver more — “say yes only to what you can really do”

  1. Reliable: coming when you said, finishing on the set day, saying no if you can’t, writing promises down, telling early if delayed.
  2. Unreliable: agreeing to everything, forgetting what you said, not doing your part, promising then vanishing, ignoring team messages.
  3. Can’t keep a promise? Tell the person early, say sorry and offer a new plan.

Use it for: Team projects, sports practice, helping friends, club duties and promises at home.

Worked example: 🤝 Reliable or unreliable: agreeing to everything? → unreliable

  1. Saying yes to everything means you cannot do it all.
  2. So it is an unreliable habit — promise only what fits.

Check: Try it: write down every promise you make for three days and tick each one you keep ✓
