Taking responsibility — Leadership skills for students

Every leader starts by leading themself, and that starts with responsibility. A responsible student does their class duty without being told, returns what they borrow and says “I broke it, I will replace it” instead of blaming the weather or a teammate. People trust someone who owns their part — and that trust is what lets you lead others later.

Leader's tip

Own it, fix it — “say what you did, then say how you will put it right”

  1. Responsible: owning up to a mistake, doing your class duty, returning borrowed books, reporting a broken bench, checking your own work.
  2. Irresponsible: blaming a teammate, saying “not my job”, hiding a broken item, leaving the mess behind, waiting to be told.
  3. A responsible reply owns the problem and says how it will be fixed: “I forgot the chart. I will bring it tomorrow before class.”

Use it for: Class duties, homework, group projects, borrowed things, sports kit and chores at home.

Worked example: 🙋 Responsible or irresponsible: owning up to a mistake? → responsible

  1. Owning up means saying “I did it” instead of hiding or blaming.
  2. So it is a responsible habit.

Check: Try it: pick one duty this week (board, plants, kit) and do it every day without a reminder ✓
