How to think it through

Draw it — “almost every Part 2 question gets easy once you draw a line, a map, a tree or a clock”

  1. Name the type of question first.
  2. Draw it: a row of boxes, a compass, a family tree or a clock face.
  3. Use the formula from that lesson and check the answer against every clue.

Use it for: Revising Part 2 before an Olympiad, aptitude or scholarship test.

Worked example: In a row of 30 children, Meera is 9th from the left. What is Meera’s position from the right? → 22

  1. Position from the right = total − position from the left + 1.
  2. 30 − 9 + 1 = 22.

Check: 8 children on her left + Meera + 21 on her right = 30 ✓
