Divide in two easy steps — Maths trick for kids

Dividing by 15 or 24 in one go is hard, but the divisor is made of small numbers: 15 = 3 × 5. Divide by 3, then divide that answer by 5. Two easy steps give the same answer as one hard one.

The trick

Divide step by step — “÷ 15 = ÷ 3 then ÷ 5; ÷ 12 = ÷ 2 then ÷ 6”

  1. Split the divisor into two small factors: 6 = 2 × 3, 12 = 2 × 6, 15 = 3 × 5, 16 = 2 × 8, 24 = 4 × 6, 36 = 4 × 9.
  2. Divide by the first factor (halving is ÷ 2).
  3. Divide that answer by the second factor.

Use it for: Sharing things equally, finding the price of one item, and long-division sums with divisors like 12, 15 or 24.

Worked example: 375 ÷ 15 = 25

  1. 15 = 3 × 5.
  2. 375 ÷ 3 = 125.
  3. 125 ÷ 5 = 25.

Check: 25 × 15 = 250 + 125 = 375 ✓
