Divide by a 2-digit number — Mental Maths Mastery

Dividing by 12, 16 or 35 looks hard, but there are two friendly tricks. Take away big chunks you know (× 10, × 20), or change the sum into an easier one with the same answer by halving both numbers or doubling both.

How to do it in your head

Chunk or simplify — “take away big table chunks, or halve or double both numbers first”

  1. Chunking: take away × 10 or × 20 of the divisor, then divide what is left, and add the chunks.
  2. Both numbers even: halve both — the answer does not change.
  3. Divisor ends in 5: double both, so the divisor ends in 0.

Use it for: Sharing a bill among a class, price per item in a pack of 12, and checking long division.

Worked example: 432 ÷ 16 = 27

  1. Both are even, so halve both: 216 ÷ 8.
  2. 8 × 27 = 216.

Check: 16 × 27 = 160 × 2 + 16 × 7 = 320 + 112 = 432 ✓
