Divide by 4 and 8 by halving — Mental Maths Mastery

Dividing by 4 is the same as halving twice, and dividing by 8 is halving three times. Halving is much easier than long division!

How to do it in your head

Half, half, half — “÷ 4 is two halves, ÷ 8 is three”

  1. ÷ 2: halve once.
  2. ÷ 4: halve, then halve again.
  3. ÷ 8: halve three times.

Use it for: Sharing among 4 or 8 friends, quarters, and slices of a pizza.

Worked example: 216 ÷ 8 = 27

  1. Half of 216: 108.
  2. Half again: 54.
  3. Half once more: 27.

Check: 27 × 8 = 216 ✓
