Divide by splitting the number — Mental Maths Mastery

Split the big number into two parts that are easy to divide — a part made of tens from the table, and a small part. Divide each part and add the answers.

How to do it in your head

Split and share — “break the number into parts from the table, divide each part”

  1. Find a big, easy part in the table: 6 × 60 = 360.
  2. The rest is the small part: 372 − 360 = 12.
  3. Divide both parts and add: 60 + 2.

Use it for: Sharing money or sweets equally, finding the price of one, and checking long division.

Worked example: 372 ÷ 6 = 62

  1. Split 372 into 360 and 12.
  2. 360 ÷ 6 = 60 and 12 ÷ 6 = 2.
  3. 60 + 2 = 62.

Check: 62 × 6 = 372 ✓
