Remainders in your head — Mental Maths Mastery

Not everything shares out exactly. Find the biggest answer in the table that is not more than your number — the gap is the remainder, and it is always smaller than the number you divide by.

How to do it in your head

Nearest table fact — “find the biggest table answer that fits, the rest is left over”

  1. Go up the table until the next answer would be too big.
  2. Take that table answer away from your number.
  3. What is left is the remainder; how many times is the number of full groups.

Use it for: Packing things in boxes, making teams and rows, and sweets left over after sharing.

Worked example: What is the remainder when 59 is divided by 7? → 3

  1. 7 × 8 = 56, and 7 × 9 = 63 is too big.
  2. 59 − 56 = 3, which is less than 7.

Check: 7 × 8 + 3 = 56 + 3 = 59 ✓

✏️ Practice
