Subtract by rounding up and adding back — Mental Maths Mastery

Taking away 297 is hard; taking away 300 is easy. Round the number you take away up to a round number, subtract that, and then add back the little bit you took too much.

How to do it in your head

Round up, add back — “take away a round number, then give back the extra”

  1. Round the number you take away up to the next ten or hundred: 297 → 300 (3 too many).
  2. Take away the round number.
  3. Add back the extra, because you took away too much.

Use it for: Prices like ₹298 or ₹495, any number ending in 7, 8 or 9, and quick change.

Worked example: 823 − 297 = 526

  1. 297 is 300 − 3.
  2. 823 − 300 = 523.
  3. Add back 3: 523 + 3 = 526.

Check: 526 + 297 = 823 ✓
