Saving goals — Money maths for kids

Saving for a cricket bat or a bicycle? Take away what you already have from the price, then divide by what you save each week. If it does not divide exactly, round up — one more week is needed for the last bit.

The method

Goal ÷ weekly saving — “divide what you still need by what you save each week; round up”

  1. Still needed = goal price − money you already have.
  2. Weeks = still needed ÷ saving each week. A remainder means one more week (round up).
  3. Saving each week = goal ÷ number of weeks.

Use it for: Saving pocket money for something special, and goal-setting in financial literacy lessons.

Worked example: Aarav wants a cricket bat that costs ₹750, has ₹150 already and saves ₹80 every week. In how many weeks will Aarav have enough? → 8

  1. Still needed: 750 − 150 = 600.
  2. 600 ÷ 80 = 7 remainder 40, so round up to 8 weeks.

Check: After 7 weeks: 150 + 560 = 710 (not enough); after 8 weeks: 150 + 640 = 790 ✓
