Tables 17 and 18 — Tables & Multiplication Mastery

These are the tables most children skip. With “10 and a bit” they are just the 7 and 8 tables with a 10 table added on.

How it works

Ten and a bit — “18 × n = 10 × n + 8 × n”

  1. 17 × n = 10 × n + 7 × n.
  2. 18 × n = 10 × n + 8 × n (or double the 9 table).
  3. Add the two parts.

Use it for: Larger multiplication, factors and long division in Class 4–6.

Worked example: 17 × 6 = 102

  1. Split 17 into 10 and 7: 10 × 6 + 7 × 6.
  2. 10 × 6 = 60 and 7 × 6 = 42.
  3. Add: 60 + 42 = 102.

Check: 17 × 6 = 20 × 6 − 3 × 6 = 120 − 18 = 102 ✓
