Decimal ÷ decimal — Speed Calculation

Dividing by a decimal feels strange, but a division does not change if you multiply both numbers by the same amount. Move both decimal points right until the number you divide by is whole, and you are back to a normal division.

The fast method

Shift both points — “multiply both numbers by 10 or 100 so you divide by a whole number”

  1. Count the decimal places in the divisor (the number you divide by): 0.12 has 2.
  2. Move BOTH decimal points that many places right: 1.44 ÷ 0.12 → 144 ÷ 12.
  3. Divide as usual: 144 ÷ 12 = 12.

Use it for: How many 0.25 L glasses fill a bottle, unit prices, speed and distance questions, and decimals in Class 7–8.

Worked example: 1.44 ÷ 0.12 = 12

  1. 0.12 has 2 decimal places: × 100 on both.
  2. 1.44 ÷ 0.12 → 144 ÷ 12.
  3. 144 ÷ 12 = 12.

Check: 12 × 0.12 = 1.44 ✓
