Decimal × decimal — Speed Calculation

You do not need a new method to multiply decimals. Ignore the points, multiply the whole numbers you already know, then count how many digits sat after the points in the question. The answer gets that many decimal places.

The fast method

Count the places — “the answer has as many decimal places as both numbers together”

  1. Forget the points and multiply the whole numbers: 2.5 × 1.4 → 25 × 14 = 350.
  2. Count the decimal places in both numbers: 1 + 1 = 2.
  3. Put the point that many places from the right: 3.50 — then drop the 0 at the end: 3.5.

Use it for: Prices of 1.5 kg of vegetables, areas in square metres, and decimals in Class 6–8.

Worked example: 2.5 × 1.4 = 3.5

  1. 25 × 14 = 350.
  2. 1 + 1 = 2 decimal places.
  3. 3.50 → 3.5.

Check: 2.5 × 1.4 = 2.5 + 2.5 × 0.4 = 2.5 + 1 = 3.5 ✓

✏️ Practice

Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
