Speaking tips

Grammar point — “an before a vowel sound (an egg); a before other sounds (a duck); names start with a capital”

  1. Say the ABC in order: A, B, C … X, Y, Z. Ask: “Which letter comes after M?” — N.
  2. Use an before a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u): an ant, an egg, an owl. Use a before other sounds: a ball, a duck.
  3. Capital letters start every sentence and every name of a person, place or day: Riya, Delhi, Monday — and the word I.

Use it for: Writing your name, spelling words aloud, finding words in a dictionary, and writing sentences in class.

Worked example: ☂️ What is this? Umbrella

  1. Look at the picture: ☂️
  2. ☂️ is “umbrella” — in Hindi, छाता. It starts with a vowel sound, so we say an umbrella.

Check: Say the ABC aloud from A to Z, then spell your name and say which letter is a capital ✓
