Food is the easiest thing to talk about! This lesson teaches food and drink words and the sentences children need at mealtimes: “I am hungry.” “Can I have some water, please?” “I like mangoes.”

Speaking tips

Key words — “roti, rice, mango, banana, apple, egg, milk, water, tea, ice cream”

  1. We eat food and drink milk, water or tea. Say what you like: “I like mangoes.” “I don’t like carrots.”
  2. Use an before a vowel sound (an apple, an egg), a before other sounds (a banana), and some for drinks or more than one (some water).
  3. Words like mango and tomato add -es for more than one: mangoes, tomatoes.
  4. Ask politely: “May I have a banana, please?” “Can I have some water, please?”

Use it for: Mealtimes at home, ordering at a restaurant, sharing tiffin at school, and helping in the kitchen.

Worked example: 🥭 What is this? Mango

  1. Look at the picture: 🥭
  2. 🥭 is “mango” — in Hindi, आम.

Check: Say aloud: “I am hungry. Can I have a roti, please?” ✓
