Speaking tips

Grammar point — “How many … are there? — There are four. / There is one.”

  1. Ask about things you can count with How many: “How many cows are there?”
  2. Answer “There is one …” for one and “There are …” for more than one.
  3. Most words add -s (two cows, three hens), but sheep stays the same: one sheep, two sheep.

Use it for: A trip to a village or a farm, counting things at home, and maths word problems in English.

Worked example: How ___ hens are there? Many

  1. Read the sentence and try each word in the gap: more, many, much.
  2. We can count hens, so we ask How many hens are there?

Check: Count the chairs in your home and say aloud: “There are … chairs.” ✓
