Multiply by 12 — Vedic maths trick

Multiplying by 12 needs no 12 times table: every answer digit is twice a digit plus its neighbour on the right.

The trick

Sopantyadvayamantyam — “the ultimate and twice the penultimate”

  1. Write a 0 in front of the number.
  2. Each answer column = twice the digit + the digit to its right (nothing to the right of the last digit).
  3. Combine from the right with carries.

Use it for: Any whole number times 12 — prices by the dozen, months in years.

Worked example: 23 × 12 = 276

  1. Write 023.
  2. Columns: 2 × 0 + 2 = 2; 2 × 2 + 3 = 7; 2 × 3 + 0 = 6.
  3. No carries.
  4. Answer: 276.

Check: 23 × 12 = 23 × 10 + 23 × 2 = 230 + 46 = 276 ✓
