The trick
Ekanyunena Purvena — “by one less than the one before”
Write the number with as many digits as there are nines (add zeros in front if needed).
Left part: the number minus 1.
Right part: “all from 9 and the last from 10” of the number.
More digits than the nines (237 × 99)? Split off as many digits as there are nines (2 | 37): left = number − (front part + 1) = 234, right = complement of 37 = 63 → 23463.
Use it for: Any number times 9, 99 or 999. For 47 × 999 write 047: 46 | 953 = 46953. For 237 × 99: 234 | 63 = 23463.
Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
