Writer's tip

Use all five senses — “tell the reader what you see, hear, smell, taste and feel”

  1. Sight: colours, light, shapes (the lake sparkled).
  2. Hearing: sounds (the bells rang). Smell: scents (the scent of jasmine).
  3. Taste: sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter. Touch: soft, rough, sticky, icy, prickly.

Use it for: Describing a place, a meal or a festival in compositions and stories.

Worked example: Which sense does this line use? → smell

  1. The line: “The smell of fresh bread filled the kitchen.”
  2. It tells what you can smell — the clue is the word “smell”.

Check: Close your eyes: you can still smell the bread — so it is not sight ✓
