About this sheet

Calligraphy means “beautiful writing”. The italic hand is the best one to start with: its letters are simple, slightly sloped and built from a few basic strokes, so practising the strokes first makes every letter easier.

Each row has a dark model, grey strokes to trace and space to repeat them. The light slanted lines show the lean of about 6°, and the dashed line is the x-height — the top of small letters such as a, n and o.

Once the strokes feel steady, switch “What to practise” to small letters, capitals, the calligraphy word list or your own text.

How to hold a calligraphy pen

  • Which pen?: Start with a 2–4 mm chisel-tip (calligraphy) marker or a flat-tipped felt pen. A dip pen and ink can come later, with an adult nearby.
  • Hold it at 45°: Hold the pen like a pencil, but turn it so the flat edge of the tip sits at about 45° to the base line. Keep the same angle all the time — do not twist the pen on curves.
  • Thick and thin: With the 45° angle, downstrokes come out thick and upstrokes thin on their own. You only steer the pen; never press hard.
  • Lean and space: Follow the light slant lines so every letter leans the same way, and leave about one “n” of space between words.
  • Slow and relaxed: Pull strokes towards you slowly, rest your hand on the paper and take short breaks. Ten calm minutes beat an hour of rushing.

Tips for better handwriting

Hold the pencil right

Hold the pencil between the thumb and first finger, resting on the middle finger, a little above the sharpened tip. Grip gently — no white knuckles.

Sit well

Feet flat on the floor, back straight, the sheet slightly tilted and held still with the other hand.

Slow is neat

Trace slowly first. Speed comes later on its own; rushing makes letters wobbly.

Use the lines

Every letter sits on the base line. Small letters stay between the middle and base lines; tall letters touch the top line.

A little every day

10–15 minutes a day works better than one long session a week. One sheet a day is plenty for young children.

Praise effort

Circle the best letter on each row together. Children improve faster when they can see what “good” looks like.

Questions

Are these handwriting practice sheets free?

Yes. The generator and every sheet are completely free, with no sign-in. Make and print as many sheets as you like.

How do I download a handwriting practice sheet as a PDF?

Press “Print / Save as PDF”, then choose “Save as PDF” as the printer. Keep the paper size A4, scale 100% and margins default or none. On a phone, use the share or print option of your browser.

What age are these handwriting sheets for?

Children aged about 4 to 12. Big print capital letters and numbers suit ages 4–6, medium small letters and words suit ages 6–8, and small cursive letters and sentences suit ages 8 and up. Pick the size your child can write comfortably.

What are four-line (kitta) guides?

Four-line guides have a top line, a middle line, a base line and a bottom line. Capital and tall letters reach the top line, small letters sit between the middle and base lines, and letters with tails such as g, j, p, q and y go down to the bottom line. Two-line guides show only the top and base lines.

Should my child learn print or cursive first?

Most children learn print letters first and start joined (cursive) writing later, often in Class 2 to 4. Follow the style your child’s school uses — the generator has both.

Can I make a name tracing worksheet?

Yes. Type your child’s name in the “Child’s name” box and a name-writing line is added at the top of the sheet. Choose “My own text” to fill the whole sheet with the name or any words you like (up to 300 characters).

Is my child’s name saved or sent anywhere?

No. The sheets are made in your browser. Names and text you type stay on your device and are not sent to TalentJR.

Can I make calligraphy practice sheets?

Yes. Choose “Calligraphy (italic)” as the writing style. The sheets use a broad-nib italic hand with x-height lines and light slant guides, and “Calligraphy basic strokes” gives downstrokes, upstrokes, arches, cups and ovals to warm up. Use a 2–4 mm chisel-tip marker held at about 45°.

Grey letters or dotted letters — which is better for tracing?

Grey letters are easiest for young children and work best for cursive. Dotted letters give a classic tracing look. Try both and keep the one your child likes.

How long should my child practise handwriting each day?

About 10–15 minutes a day is enough. Short, regular practice with good posture and a relaxed pencil grip improves handwriting more than long sessions.
