About these worksheets

These sheets take a child from the very first pencil strokes to writing whole words. They begin with pre-writing practice — standing lines, sleeping lines, curves and circles — because every English letter is made of these few shapes. Next come capital letters A to Z, then small letters a to z, each with dotted letters to trace and space to write alone. The last set has simple picture words such as “Ant”, “Ball” and “Sun” to trace.

Nursery and LKG children usually start with the lines and capital letters; UKG children move to small letters and words; Class 1 children can use the word sheets for neat handwriting practice. Say the letter name and its sound while tracing — that ties handwriting to reading. Two or three letters a day is plenty. If you want sheets with your child’s own name or your own words, use our free handwriting sheet maker. Praise a neat letter more than a fast one.

Skills practised

  • Pre-writing strokes: standing, sleeping and slanting lines, curves
  • Forming capital letters A–Z
  • Forming small letters a–z on the lines
  • Letter names and sounds
  • Tracing and copying simple words
  • Pencil grip and control

How to use these sheets

  1. Say the letter’s name and sound, and trace it in the air.
  2. Trace the dotted letters, starting at the dot and following the arrows.
  3. Write the letter on your own in the empty line.
  4. Circle your neatest letter and say a word that starts with it.

Tip for parents and teachers: Teach small letters in families that move the same way: c, a, d, g, o, q (round letters), then l, t, i, j (straight), then n, m, h, r, b, p. Children learn faster when one movement covers many letters.

Questions

Should my child learn capital or small letters first?

Most Indian schools start capital letters in Nursery and small letters in LKG. Capitals are easier to form (straight lines); small letters are what children read most, so add them as soon as capitals are steady.

What are pre-writing worksheets?

Sheets with lines, curves, zig-zags and circles to trace. They build the pencil control a child needs before letters — ideal for ages 3 to 4.

How many letters should a child trace a day?

Two or three letters, five to ten minutes. Short daily practice beats one long session.

Are these worksheets free?

Yes. Every sheet is free to open, print and download — no sign-up and no payment. You may use them at home, in tuition and in your classroom.

How do I print a worksheet?

Open the sheet, then press “Print” (or “Download Worksheet” to save the picture and print it later). Use plain A4 paper and choose “Fit to page” in the print settings so nothing is cut off.
