Roles in a team — Leadership skills for students

A team works best when everyone knows their job. The leader guides the team and keeps it on track; the note-taker writes the minutes; the timekeeper watches the clock; the treasurer keeps the money record; the presenter speaks for the team. Rotating roles lets everyone learn — and you can lead from any role by doing it well.

Leader's tip

Every job has an owner — “clear roles mean nothing is missed”

  1. Leader: guides the team, keeps it on track, makes sure all are heard. Note-taker: writes the minutes, notes who does what.
  2. Timekeeper: watches the clock, warns when time is short. Treasurer: keeps the money record, counts the cash. Presenter: speaks for the team, talks to the audience.
  3. Give every member a role so every job is covered; rotate roles so everyone learns more.

Use it for: Group projects, clubs, quiz teams, event committees and class councils.

Worked example: 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Which team role does this: watches the clock? → timekeeper

  1. Watching the clock keeps the meeting to time.
  2. Someone who “watches the clock” — that is a job for the timekeeper.

Check: Try it: at your next group meeting, give out the five roles and see how much faster it goes ✓
