Collaboration and competition — Leadership skills for students

Collaboration is working together for one goal: pooling ideas for one poster or two classes cleaning a park together. Competition is trying to beat others: a race on sports day or an inter-house quiz. Both have a place — inside your own team you collaborate, and you compete fairly with other teams. Good team players share ideas, do their part and cheer teammates.

Leader's tip

Together inside, fair outside — “help your team, respect the other team”

  1. Collaboration: sharing notes with your group, building one model as a team, planning an event together.
  2. Competition: a race, a quiz final, a debate match, a drawing contest, a tug of war. Healthy competition pushes you to improve; congratulate the winner.
  3. Good team player: sharing ideas, helping others, doing your part, respecting all views. Poor: hogging the ball, skipping meetings, mocking or blaming others.

Use it for: House events, sports, group projects, quizzes, class activities and clubs.

Worked example: 🤝 Collaboration or competition: pooling ideas for one poster? → collaboration

  1. Everyone adds ideas to make one shared poster.
  2. So it is collaboration.

Check: Try it: in your next team game or project, cheer or help one teammate every time they try ✓
