Three friends each have a different pet. Draw a 3 × 3 grid: friends down the side, pets across the top. Each “not” clue crosses out one box, and when only one box is left in a row or column, that is the match.
Cross out — “every “not” clue crosses out a box; a row or column with one box left is the answer”
Draw a grid with people on one side and things on the other.
Cross out a box for every “does not” clue; tick a box for every “has” clue.
A row or column with only one box left must be a tick — and that tick crosses out the rest of its column or row.
Use it for: Logic puzzles in Olympiads, puzzle books and coding contests.
Worked example: Aarav, Diya and Kabir each have a different pet: cat, dog or parrot. Diya does not have the cat. Kabir does not have the cat. Diya does not have the parrot. Who has the parrot? Kabir
Neither Diya nor Kabir has the cat, so Aarav has the cat.
Diya has neither the cat nor the parrot, so she has the dog — and Kabir has the parrot.
Check: Aarav – cat, Diya – dog, Kabir – parrot fits all three clues ✓
Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
