The method

Count up in jumps — “jump to the next ten, then the next hundred, then the note paid”

  1. Find the total cost first.
  2. Change = note paid − cost.
  3. Count up in jumps (to the next ten, then hundreds) and add the jumps.

Use it for: Shopping with bigger notes, checking change, and Class 3–4 money word problems.

Worked example: Rohan buys a water bottle for ₹165 and a pen for ₹20, and pays with a ₹500 note. How much change does Rohan get (in ₹)? → 315

  1. Cost: 165 + 20 = 185.
  2. Count up: 185 + 15 = 200, 200 + 300 = 500. Change = 15 + 300 = 315.

Check: 185 + 315 = 500 ✓
