Making a bill — Money maths for kids

A shop bill lists each thing, how many you bought and the price of one. Each line costs number × price. Add all the lines for the total. If one price is missing, take the known lines away from the total.

The method

Line by line — “work out each line of the bill, then add the lines”

  1. Line cost = how many × price of one.
  2. Total bill = add all the line costs.
  3. Missing price = total − the lines you know.

Use it for: Checking a shop bill, school supply lists, and bill-making questions in Class 3–4 maths.

Worked example: Bill: 2 notebooks at ₹40 each, 1 geometry box at ₹120 and 3 pens at ₹15 each. What is the total bill (in ₹)? → 245

  1. Lines: 2 × 40 = 80, 1 × 120 = 120, 3 × 15 = 45.
  2. 80 + 120 + 45 = 245.

Check: 245 − 45 − 120 = 80 = 2 × 40 ✓
