Compare amounts — Money maths for kids

Who has more money — someone with 3 notes of ₹20 or someone with 7 notes of ₹10? More notes does not always mean more money! Find each total first, then compare the numbers: tens first, then ones.

The method

Total, then compare — “work out how much each person has before you decide who has more”

  1. Work out each total: number × value.
  2. Compare the totals: more tens means more money; if the tens are the same, compare the ones.
  3. How much more = bigger total − smaller total.

Use it for: Deciding if you have enough money, sharing fairly, and comparing amounts in Class 1–2 maths.

Worked example: Aarav has 3 notes of ₹20. Meera has 7 notes of ₹10. Who has more money? Meera

  1. Aarav: 3 × ₹20 = ₹60. Meera: 7 × ₹10 = ₹70.
  2. 70 is more than 60.

Check: Meera has ₹70 − ₹60 = ₹10 more than Aarav ✓
