Adding money — Money maths for kids

Adding money is adding numbers with a ₹ in front. Line up the ones and tens, add the ones first, and carry a ten when the ones make 10 or more. Use it to find what two or three things cost together.

The method

Column adding — “add the ones, carry a ten if needed, then add the tens”

  1. Write the amounts one under the other, ones under ones.
  2. Add the ones. If they make 10 or more, write the ones and carry 1 ten.
  3. Add the tens (and the carried ten). Keep the ₹ sign in the question.

Use it for: Finding the total cost of things you buy, adding gift money, and Class 2 money worksheets.

Worked example: ₹38 + ₹47 = 85

  1. Ones: 8 + 7 = 15 → write 5, carry 1.
  2. Tens: 3 + 4 + 1 = 8. So ₹85.

Check: 85 − 47 = 38 ✓
