Counting notes — Money maths for kids

Counting notes is like counting coins with bigger numbers. Start with the notes worth the most, find their money, then add the smaller notes and coins. Counting big to small keeps the adding easy.

The method

Big to small — “count the biggest notes first, then the smaller notes, then the coins”

  1. Start with the notes worth the most.
  2. Money for each kind = number of notes × value of one note.
  3. Add the kinds together, from big to small.

Use it for: Counting gift money, checking money at a shop counter, and Class 2 money worksheets.

Worked example: Kabir has 2 notes of ₹100, 1 note of ₹50 and 3 notes of ₹10. How many rupees does Kabir have? → 280

  1. 2 × ₹100 = ₹200, 1 × ₹50 = ₹50, 3 × ₹10 = ₹30.
  2. 200 + 50 + 30 = 280.

Check: Count on: 100, 200, 250, 260, 270, 280 ✓
