The method

Skip count — “count coins of one kind in steps of their value: 5, 10, 15, 20 …”

  1. Sort the coins into piles of the same value.
  2. Money in a pile = number of coins × value of one coin (or skip count).
  3. Add all the piles to get the total.

Use it for: Emptying a piggy bank, paying with coins at a shop, and money worksheets for Class 1 and Class 2.

Worked example: Diya has 4 coins of ₹5 and 3 coins of ₹2. How many rupees does Diya have? → 26

  1. 4 coins of ₹5: 5, 10, 15, 20 → ₹20. 3 coins of ₹2: 2, 4, 6 → ₹6.
  2. 20 + 6 = 26.

Check: Count on from 20 in twos: 22, 24, 26 ✓
