Making a budget — Money maths for kids

A budget is the money you plan to spend. For a birthday party or a school trip, list every cost, add them up and check the total is not more than the budget. Divide the budget by the price of one gift to see how many you can buy.

The method

Plan before you spend — “list every cost, add them, and keep the total inside the budget”

  1. Total cost = add every cost (or cost per child × number of children).
  2. Money left = budget − total cost. If the cost is more than the budget, it is not enough.
  3. Most you can buy = budget ÷ price of one, ignoring the remainder.

Use it for: Planning a party, a picnic or a school trip, and budget questions in Class 4–5.

Worked example: Meera has a budget of ₹1000 for a birthday party. The cake costs ₹450, the balloons ₹120 and the snacks ₹280. How many rupees are left? → 150

  1. Spent: 450 + 120 + 280 = 850.
  2. Left: 1000 − 850 = 150.

Check: 850 + 150 = 1000 ✓
