Pocket money and time — Money maths for kids

Pocket money adds up over time. ₹20 a week becomes ₹80 in 4 weeks. Use 7 days in a week and 12 months in a year. If you spend part each week, the money saved each week is what you get minus what you spend.

The method

Per week, per year — “7 days in a week, 12 months in a year — multiply the money by the count”

  1. Total = money each time × number of times (7 days = 1 week, 12 months = 1 year).
  2. Saved each week = pocket money − money spent.
  3. Money each week = total ÷ number of weeks.

Use it for: Planning pocket money, saving for something, and time-and-money questions in Class 4–5.

Worked example: Kabir gets ₹30 a week, spends ₹12 each week and saves the rest. How many rupees has Kabir saved after 6 weeks? → 108

  1. Saved each week: 30 − 12 = 18.
  2. After 6 weeks: 18 × 6 = 108.

Check: 6 weeks × ₹30 = ₹180 got, 6 × ₹12 = ₹72 spent, 180 − 72 = 108 ✓
