Profit and loss at a fair stall — Money maths for kids

Running a stall at the school fair? The money you spend on things is the cost. The money from selling is the sales. If sales are more than the cost, you made a profit; if less, a loss; if equal, no profit, no loss.

The method

Sales vs cost — “money in from sales minus money spent; more in is profit, more out is loss”

  1. Sales = number sold × selling price.
  2. Profit = sales − cost (when sales are more). Loss = cost − sales (when cost is more).
  3. Profit on one × number sold = total profit.

Use it for: School fairs and charity stalls, small businesses, and profit and loss in Class 7–8.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Profit and loss calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: Kavya’s class stall spends ₹350 to make 40 cups of lemonade and sells all of them at ₹15 each. What is the profit (in ₹)? → 250

  1. Sales: 40 × 15 = 600.
  2. Profit: 600 − 350 = 250.

Check: 350 + 250 = 600 = 40 × 15 ✓
