Percentages of a budget — Money maths for kids

Families plan a monthly budget: maybe 40% for food, 25% for rent and the rest saved. 40% means ₹40 out of every ₹100. To find the money for a part, multiply the budget by the percent and divide by 100.

The method

Out of 100 — “a percent is a share out of every 100 rupees of the budget”

  1. Money for a part = budget × % ÷ 100.
  2. Percent = part ÷ whole × 100.
  3. All the parts add up to 100%; the rest % = 100 − the others.

Use it for: Understanding a family budget, splitting pocket money, and percentage questions in Class 6–8.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Percentage calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: Of a ₹20000 monthly budget, 40% goes on food and 25% on rent. The rest is saved. How many rupees are saved? → 7000

  1. Saved: 100 − 40 − 25 = 35%.
  2. 20000 × 35 ÷ 100 = 7000.

Check: Food 8000 + rent 5000 + saved 7000 = 20000 ✓
