Reading short sentences — Phonics for kids

Now we put it all together: short sentences with CVC words, sight words and long vowels. Your child reads (or listens to) a sentence and picks the picture it is about — or picks the sentence that matches a picture.

How the sounds work

Read every word — “sound out new words, know the sight words, then think about what it means”

  1. Read the sentence one word at a time, pointing with a finger.
  2. Sound out new words; read sight words at a glance.
  3. Think: what is the sentence about? Find that picture.

Use it for: Reading first story books on their own and understanding what they read.

Worked example: Read: “The cat is on the mat.” Which picture shows it? → cat

  1. Read it slowly, word by word: “The cat is on the mat.”
  2. The sentence is about a cat 🐱 — not the sun or a goat.

Check: The sentence names a cat 🐱 ✓
