Rhyming words — Phonics for kids

Rhyming words end with the same sound: cat and hat, moon and spoon, bee and tree. Rhymes help children hear the parts of words — a big step towards reading.

How the sounds work

Same ending sound — “words rhyme when they sound the same from the vowel to the end”

  1. Say both words and listen to the end: c-at, h-at.
  2. If the endings sound the same, the words rhyme.
  3. The start can be different: cat, hat and bat all rhyme.

Use it for: Nursery rhymes and poems, guessing new words, and spelling word families.

Worked example: Which picture rhymes with “cat”? → hat

  1. Rhyming words end with the same sound. Say “cat” and then each picture: hat, bee, ox.
  2. “cat” and “hat” end with the same sound, “at”: cat – hat.

Check: c-at and h-at end the same ✓
