Averages — Quantitative aptitude for kids

The average is the total shared equally: total ÷ how many. When someone joins or leaves, or two groups are put together, work with the totals — never just average the averages.

The method

Think in totals — “total = average × how many; changes happen to the total”

  1. Average = total ÷ how many; total = average × how many.
  2. A number added or removed: compare the new total with the old total.
  3. Two groups together: add the two totals, then divide by everyone.

Use it for: Marks, cricket batting averages, temperatures, and averages in Class 6–10 and aptitude tests.

🧮 Check your own sums with the free Average calculator — it shows the working.

Worked example: The average of 5 numbers is 40. When one more number is added, the average becomes 42. What number was added? → 52

  1. Old total = 5 × 40 = 200. New total = 6 × 42 = 252.
  2. The new number = 252 − 200 = 52.

Check: (200 + 52) ÷ 6 = 252 ÷ 6 = 42 ✓
