Data interpretation — Quantitative aptitude for kids

A small table of books sold, students or visitors can answer many questions: the total, the average, the highest and lowest, the difference, or what percent of the total one row is. Read carefully and find the total first.

The method

Total first — “most questions need the total — then percent, average or difference follow”

  1. Total = add every value. Average = total ÷ number of rows.
  2. Percent of total = that value ÷ total × 100.
  3. Most/fewest: compare all the values. Difference = bigger − smaller.

Use it for: Tables, bar graphs and pie charts in Class 6–10, data interpretation sections in aptitude tests, and reading news charts.

Worked example: Books sold by a shop — Mon: 40, Tue: 60, Wed: 30, Thu: 50, Fri: 20. The number for Thu is what percent of the total? → 25

  1. Total = 40 + 60 + 30 + 50 + 20 = 200.
  2. 50 × 100 ÷ 200 = 25.

Check: 25% of 200 = 50 ✓
