Writer's tip

Which tool is it? — “decide which skill the question tests, then use that lesson’s tip”

  1. Decide which skill the question is testing.
  2. Use that lesson’s tip — the story element, the sense or comparison, the genre, the point of view or the syllable count.
  3. Read your choice back into the question to check it.

Use it for: Final revision before English exams, story-writing competitions and the course certificate.

Worked example: Is this a simile, a metaphor or neither? → neither

  1. The sentence: “Grandpa reads the newspaper every day.”
  2. There is no “like” or “as … as”, and nothing is said to BE something else — it simply tells what Grandpa does.

Check: Grandpa is just reading — nothing is compared ✓
