Poems: rhyme and haiku — Creative writing for kids

Poems play with sounds. Rhyming words end with the same sound (moon – spoon). A haiku is a tiny poem of three lines with 5, 7 and 5 syllables — clap the beats to count them.

Writer's tip

Listen to the sounds — “rhymes end with the same sound; a haiku has 5, 7 and 5 syllables”

  1. Rhymes end with the same sound: cat – hat, rain – train.
  2. A syllable is one beat: but-ter-fly has 3.
  3. A haiku has 3 lines: 5 syllables, then 7, then 5. Count every word’s beats and add them up.

Use it for: Writing poems, haiku competitions and poetry questions in English.

Worked example: Count the syllables (beats) in this haiku line: → 5

  1. The line: “Rain taps on the roof”
  2. Clap each word: rain 1 + taps 1 + on 1 + the 1 + roof 1 = 5.

Check: Five claps — a perfect first or last line for a haiku ✓
