Story elements: characters — Creative writing for kids
Every story is about someone — a child, a grandparent, even a puppy or a monkey. These are the characters. The main character is the one the story keeps coming back to: the one with the problem.
Follow the problem — “the main character is the one who has the problem and sorts it out”
List everyone in the story — people and animals are all characters.
The main character appears again and again, has the problem and sorts it out.
A helper may appear once or twice. Describe the main character by what they DO: helping shows kindness, trying again shows determination.
Use it for: Reading any story in class, and planning your own: decide who your main character is before you write.
Worked example: Read the story. Who is the main character? → Diya
The story: One stormy night, Diya heard a whimper in a lane in Kochi. A tiny puppy was shivering under a broken cart. Diya held out a biscuit and spoke softly to it. The puppy crept out and licked her hand. Diya named him Moti and made him a warm bed.
Diya hears the puppy, helps it and gives it a bed — the story keeps coming back to her. Moti is the puppy she helps.
Check: Ask “whose problem is it?” — the puppy is cold, but it is Diya who solves it ✓
Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
