Story elements: setting — Creative writing for kids
The setting is the place and the time of a story — a village pond on a hot afternoon, a wedding hall on a festive night. Writers usually give it in the very first sentence so the reader can picture it.
Place + time — “the setting tells where and when the story happens”
Look for the PLACE: a school bus, a beach, the village pond.
Look for the TIME: one rainy morning, on Sports Day, during the holidays.
The sentence that gives both is usually the first one.
Use it for: Starting a story of your own, and answering “where and when?” questions about a story you read.
Worked example: Read the story. Where does it take place? → the village pond
The story: One hot afternoon, Kabir played cricket by the village pond. Farhan hit the ball so hard that it splashed into the water. Kabir tried to reach it, but his arms were too short. He tied a basket to a stick and scooped the ball out. Kabir and Farhan cheered and went on with the game.
The first sentence gives the place: “by the village pond”. The time is “one hot afternoon”.
Check: The ball splashes into the water — that fits a pond ✓
