Once there is a problem, the reader wants to know how it is fixed. The solution comes near the end: a clever idea, a helper, or the main character trying again.

Writer's tip

Problem → solution — “the solution is how the problem gets fixed, near the end”

  1. First find the problem.
  2. Then find the part where the problem is fixed — usually the sentence just before the ending.
  3. The solution must fix THIS problem; a fix for something else does not count.

Use it for: Ending your own stories well, and answering “how was the problem solved?” questions.

Worked example: Which is the best solution to this problem? → A farmer shows how to put the chain back

  1. The problem: A bicycle chain slips off halfway up a hill
  2. Only one choice is about a bicycle chain: a farmer shows how to put it back. A pond or homework does not fix a chain.

Check: After the fix, Rohan can ride on — the problem is gone ✓
