Beginning, middle and end — Creative writing for kids
Every story has three parts. The beginning meets the character and the setting, the middle tells the problem and what the character tries, and the end shows how it all turns out.
Three parts — “beginning (who, where, when), middle (the problem), end (how it turns out)”
BEGINNING: introduces who, where and when (On a festive night, Zoya danced in the wedding hall.).
MIDDLE: the problem and what the character tries.
END: the problem is solved and we see how everyone feels.
Use it for: Planning a story in three boxes before you write, and putting jumbled story sentences in order.
Worked example: These sentences come from one story. Which one is the ENDING? → Zoya gave it back, and Aunt Lata thanked her warmly.
The choices: “Zoya gave it back, and Aunt Lata thanked her warmly.”, “On a festive night, Zoya danced in the wedding hall.”, “Zoya looked carefully under every chair and table.”
The first one is the beginning (it gives the time and the place) and the search is the middle. Giving the earring back and being thanked is how it all turns out.
Check: Read them in order: dance → search → thanks. It makes sense ✓
Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
