Writer's tip

Show HOW — “a strong verb tells exactly how something is done”

  1. Spot the weak verb: went, ate, said, looked, walked, took.
  2. Ask HOW it was done: quietly? greedily? quickly?
  3. Choose the strong verb that means exactly that: tiptoed, gobbled, dashed.

Use it for: Editing your stories: replace every “went” and “said” you can with a stronger verb.

Worked example: Which strong verb means “walked quietly on your toes”? → tiptoed

  1. Think of walking very quietly, on your toes, past a sleeping baby.
  2. That is tiptoed. Scrubbed means cleaned hard, and glanced means took a quick look.

Check: “Dev tiptoed past his sleeping baby sister” — you can picture it ✓
