Adjectives that paint a picture — Creative writing for kids

Adjectives describe nouns. Vague ones — nice, good, okay, fine — tell the reader almost nothing. Exact ones — fluffy, fiery, enormous, rickety — paint a picture.

Writer's tip

Be exact — “choose an adjective that shows exactly what something is like”

  1. Find the noun you are describing (the kitten).
  2. Ask: what does it look, feel, sound, smell or taste like?
  3. Choose the exact adjective (fluffy), not a vague one (nice, good, okay, fine).

Use it for: Descriptive paragraphs, picture compositions and stories.

Worked example: Which describing word paints the clearest picture? → fluffy

  1. The sentence: “The ___ kitten curled up on my lap.”
  2. “Okay” and “fine” could describe anything. “Fluffy” tells us exactly how the kitten looks and feels.

Check: Can you picture an “okay kitten”? No — but a fluffy one, yes ✓
