What happens next? — Creative writing for kids

Good stories move forward one sensible step at a time. If dark clouds gather, rain comes next — not sunshine. Guessing what happens next is called predicting.

Writer's tip

Think cause and effect — “the next event must follow sensibly from what came before”

  1. Read what has happened so far.
  2. Ask: what would REALLY happen because of this?
  3. Reject choices that are impossible, the opposite, or about other people.

Use it for: Predicting while you read, and making sure each event in your own story leads to the next.

Worked example: Read this. What is most likely to happen next? → Big drops of rain began to fall.

  1. What happened: Dark clouds filled the sky, and thunder rumbled.
  2. Dark clouds and thunder come before rain. A clear sky is the opposite, and singing fish are impossible.

Check: Clouds → thunder → rain: each step causes the next ✓
