Writer's tip

Order words — “sequence words show what comes first, in the middle and last”

  1. Find what must happen FIRST — the step that every other step needs.
  2. Middle steps take Then and Next.
  3. The very last step takes Finally.

Use it for: Writing recipes, instructions and stories, and “put the steps in order” exercises.

Worked example: These steps to make lemonade are mixed up. Which step comes FIRST? → Cut a lemon in half.

  1. The steps: Cut a lemon in half. Squeeze the juice into a jug. Add cold water and a spoon of sugar.
  2. You cannot squeeze juice from a lemon you have not cut. So cutting the lemon comes first.

Check: First, cut the lemon. Then, squeeze it. Next, add water. Finally, stir and pour ✓
